An engineer’s calculators

The Casio ƒx-115MS.

Surprisingly, this is one of the best calculators I have ever owned.

I purchased it for using during my Fundamentals of Engineering exam as it was one of the few calculators that they allowed that did basic “solve for x”.

Now, 6 years later, I use it daily because: 1) I’ve never had to replace the batteries, 2) it lets you build a calculation on the screen and make changes to it.

Due to it being a ridiculously inexpensive calculator ($17 on Amazon), I’m picking up one for my office too.

TI-92 plus

My TI-92+, on the other hand, has gone into almost permanent storage because the batteries always need replaced and it does far too much for basic every-day usage. I’m actually surprised because I used my TI-92+ virtually every day of my college career.

Of course, with my current job, I don’t do anywhere near the same sort of math I did in college.

I’m impressed with the officer’s reaction. I wonder how that would work for non-police. “Can I help you sir?”

I love the British Museum. If I lived in London, I would go every week just to enjoy this sight.

Quite lovely.

Where is the new music? I have been trying an experiment. Whenever I’m around Facebook generation people and there’s music playing, I ask them a simple question: Can you tell in what decade the music that is playing right now was made?
Encouraging and exciting economic news!
My sister has just secured a job at TGR Exotics. She graduated from Texas A&M Wildlife & Fisheries just a few weeks ago and will be starting tomorrow. She’s out of the 10%!
P.S. That’s not my sister in the picture. That’s a baby tamandua, a type of anteater.

A lot of the people who read a bestselling novel, for example, do not read much other fiction. By contrast, the audience for an obscure novel is largely composed of people who read a lot. That means the least popular books are judged by people who have the highest standards, while the most popular are judged by people who literally do not know any better. An American who read just one book this year was disproportionately likely to have read ‘The Lost Symbol’, by Dan Brown. He almost certainly liked it.
